Bachelor Pad Renovation

This is the kind of home that stands out amongst its neighbours, prior to any work being done to it. With its dark wood vertical siding, midcentury lines, carport, private lot and its very own organic garden this place is already ahead of the pack. We sold our client’s home and he was looking for something unique, something in Rothesay and something he could make his own; this home fit the bill (and we happen to have it listed too, so we knew the property inside, out). Thus the bachelor pad renovation kick-started.

The client’s wishes? Black, white, ashy grey tones throughout the home with a dark(ish) kitchen, to boot. He wanted a blank slate where he could incorporate his colourful artwork, host a Sunday afternoon get-together with no fuss or wind down after running a business all day long, if he chose to. Once the wish list was created, edited and priced-out; demolition began and the walls came down.

We stayed true to the home’s existing footprint, keeping the kitchen, living, dining, bathrooms and bedrooms in their original locations – it all made sense, especially once walls were removed to allow the spaces to blend.

We removed all of the original kitchen cabinetry, replaced with new white thermofoil cabinets with the top row contrasted in a walnut overlay, matte black envelope hardware, dark and simple countertops and the client purchased all new appliances.

The first thought was to salvage the existing hardwood floors, however it ended up being more efficient to replace with new. So the entire home has all new hardwood (and tiled) flooring.

The home’s main event – the exposed beams and v channel tongue + groove pine ceiling were painted black (beams) and white (ceiling and walls). The brick fireplace was painted in a charcoal grey with new slate tile added to the hearth. Both bathrooms were totally gutted and in came new tiled showers, flooring and floating vanities.

Aluminum cladded wood windows painted-out black on the inside were installed. Brand spankin’ new front and side exterior doors were added to the revamped entry points; in addition to all new interior doors with black hardware.

Speaking of interior doors, if that yellow door doesn’t make you smile, we’re not sure what will.

Throughout this project’s progress, we kept thinking how pumped we were to work with a client who had a distinct taste, vision and who shared the same level of detailedness. Happiness makes the circle of construction life, go round and round.
